"The play was inspired by a bunch of men who used to hang around a little show repaire ship in my local neigbourhood - a crowd of Irish cowboys who argued and fought and loved ech other in a masculine sort of way. The sun always seemed to shine in on this little shop when I was a boy; although now it is a a dismal, boarded up, dark place with a tiny window - I have to wonder was the sunshine just a childish mirage. I turned the little gang of men into The Cavalcaders - a singing barbershop quarter. I married this story to the tale of Camelot and drew from books like Idylls Of The King by Tennyson, From Ritual To Romance by Jessie Weston and The Quest For The Holy Grail and that kind of thing... In fact if I were to wrap it all up in a nice neat little parcel for you I'd probably say that The Cavalcaders is a pagan play that has been Christianised! Billy Roche 2002
