Are you seeing me? 2005
Funded by NESTA

Director/Editor: Carol Moore

The visual representations of two tribes in N. Ireland as recorded in political and cultural murals is the backdrop to this film exactly because they reinforce a sense of distinctiveness that is Belfast. Murals have traditionally acted as boundaries or borders; their power and meaning described as, " the tattoos that define the sectarian skin of Belfast." But more recently there is a sense of communities wishing to reach out and share perhaps less threatening signifiers of cultural identity.

This is a film that illustrates what was an accepted visual cultural identity in N. Ireland. By implanting new cultural signifiers in a series of montages of minority ethnic individuals, families & groups in front of these murals, the film is attempting to ask its audience "to see" the growing ethnic diversity of this community and "to share" our representations of cultural diversity.

Both Are you seeing me? and This Belfast Thing are useful educational tools to discuss issues around identity, citizenship, diversity and racism. Please contact Carol if you wish to purchase these films.
